Outback Motortek Protection Package - Honda Africa Twin CRF 1000L

My experience is that AT owners will ask for something "specific" to their bike model.

When designing these protective accessories, Outback Motortek had a different approach from other manufacturers. Keeping the high impact zone close the toughest mounting points was our main goal and the result is a compact, extremely sturdy set of crash bars.

Right off the bat, you can see that it’s more than just an engine guard. The 27mm diameter reinforcement bar ties the engine guard and the crash bars together, increasing the strength of the overall system. This design allows for even large impacts to be distributed throughout the entire system, minimizing damage to the bike’s engine, frame and other vital components.

The engine guards are secured entirely onto the frame using 4 and 5mm steel tabs, knowing that the engine cases are the most exposed in all tip-overs, we designed these for maximum strength.

The skid plate is wider than the entire engine. It means that debris, rocks etc. that fly at it will bounce off the skid plate and leave your engine, oil filter, exhaust system header intact. Read more about features, specs and benefits below.

Important: changing air filter in your Africa Twin is a big job that requires plastic fairings removal. With our crash bars mounted, you can still remove or have the plastic fairings removed by your dealer’s mechanic for air filter change.

Honda OEM Center Stand: compatible
Please note: we do not guarantee compatibility with any aftermarket exhaust header/manifold due to the different shapes and designs carried out by dozens of exhaust manufacturer companies. At the moment, we only guarantee fitment with original Honda CRF1000L standard and Adventure. Sports exhaust header/manifold. Thank you for your understanding.

Skid plate:
  • Protects crucial areas of the engine – oil pan, engine case, oil cooler, oil filter and exhaust header! That’s a long list of very expensive parts to expose to any sort of damage that will reduce your Africa Twins value in no time.
  • Uniquely designed vent system – Not only unique but very-well thought out. No unnecessary holes were designed on this bash plate. As a result, your engine will less likely to overheat when mud and all sorts of debris from off-roading fly at the engine and get stuck between the skid plate and the engine/exhaust header.
  • Embossed ribs – These additional ribs add a lot of strength to the skid plate where it matters the most: the bottom. By embossing these ribs into the skid plate, we increase the cross-section of the material to about 9mm, hence this area is nearly twice as strong as other parts. Not to mention, these ribs act like gliders while your skid plate tries to slide over rocks, logs and other hard obstacles on offroad trails. Smaller surface means less resistance.
  • True off-road and adventure shape – What does that even mean?? It means we have experience in building top-notch bash plates. We avoid designing skid plates that are shaped like boxes, have sharp edges and corners and will guaranteed to restrict your rides off road. We design and build skid plates that you will only benefit from while riding on rough terrain.
  • 4mm thick laser cut aluminum – Nothing is ever an overkill on an adventure bike, hence we choose to build our bash plates from this ridiculously tough and thick, yet lightweight material.
  • Tough mounting hardware – No cutting corners here (either)! Precision laser cut pieces for perfect fitment using 5mm thick metal mounts. These parts absorb a lot of impacts from riding through (off-road) hell, rather than your bikes chassis or engine that are worth thousands of dollars.
  • Stainless Steel Hardware – These quality bolts and nuts will always and forever look nice and shiny. Unless your bike is covered in mud and dust…
  • Sandblasted to achieve the best possible adhesion of the coatings – it’s an extremely vital part of our manufacturing process. Sandblasted surfaces will withstand most surface scratches and give you a longer-lasting product.
  • Powder coated – combined with sandblasting it’s a killer combination to protect your product’s surface. No frills and tough just like your ADV/Dual Sport bike!

Crash bars:

  • Hand MIG welded – It’s all about the strength! We continue to follow our philosophy: toughness and functionality over appearance. Although our welders make those welds look like art.
  • Quality 27mm/1.06″ steel tube with 2mm wall thickness – any low quality steel tubing BELOW THESE SPECS will be crushed when your 450lbs+ bike crashes into the ground. Our guards are designed to take the beat!
  • Less is often more. We didn’t try to cover the whole entire bike with crash bars that look like a cobweb. The all new Honda Africa Twin 1000 has very few tough mounting points, thus it makes more sense to create one solid and compact crash bar that stays close to the few mounting points instead of being far spread out. Our compact and tough crash bars are the only way to go here to truly protect your Honda’s expensive and fragile parts.
  • Tough mounting points – No cutting corners here (either)! Precision laser cut pieces for perfect fitment using 5mm thick metal mounts. These parts absorb a lot of impacts from crashes, rather than your bikes chassis that”s worth thousands of dollars.

Engine Case Guard:

  • It's wide, it's heavy, it's vulnerable – Last but not least it's expensive. One of the first things that gets exposed to potential damage in the event of a crash is your Africa Twin 1000's Engine (case).
  • Distributed impact system - Right off the bat, you can see that it's more than just an engine case guard/ The 27mm diameter reinforcement bar ties the engine guard and the crash bars together, increasing the strength of the overall system. This design allows for even large impacts to be distributed throughout the entire system, minimizing damage to the bike's engine, frame and other vital components.

Excellent Crash Bars September 17, 2019
REVIEWER: Stephen MacKay from Beaconsfield, QC Canada
I have dropped my Africa twin a few times practising in the sand.  The bars are wide enough to keep the bike well away from the ground.  Very solid and best I have had to date.

Best Crash Bars August 3, 2019
REVIEWER: ARMIN from Hope, BC Canada
Of all systems to limit bike damage  after a crash, this one looked like the sturdiest of the bunch. Bars that come with the AT are a glorified light bar. On the Adventure Sports model you have to remove the exhaust to install. I sacrificed the light bar bracket at the bottom with a Dremel tool, so no need to remove exhaust. Quality looks great. Hope I don't scratch it up too badly!

Good product. Looks good haven’t crashed yet to see if they work. Bit of a pain getting some of the fasteners installed . Nothing a little cursing couldn’t overcome!

Great Quality May 3, 2019
REVIEWER: Darren from Ajax, ON Canada
Was looking to upgrade the factory light bar into something a little more robust and after lots of research picked the Outback Motortek product.  Looks great and is very solid on the bike.  My only complaint would be with the instructions that come with it.  Very vague and leaves you guessing, especially with the Adventure Sports model.  Youtube videos helped though.

Excellent crash bars, poor skid plate fasteners June 21, 2018
REVIEWER: Chris Chatelain from MB Canada
The crash bars are very nice. They're solid, with lots of clearance to the bike. Looks like just the right thing for protecting the radiators and engine, and giving good hand holds for manhandling the bike around.

The skid plate countersink fasteners provided are cheese grade steel though. I rounded the allen key sockets out by using a torque wrench set to factory torque spec for the factory skid plate and a good quality driver. Now I've gotta drill it out and replace it with something. I would have loved to see a high grade bolt there.
